Mr. Koie spends great time and effort creating his ceramic art, which is one reason why it is so highly valued, and also a reason why he is such a popular artist in the Tokoname-Yaki industry.
Vertical patterns from top to bottom on the surface of this Kyusu are applied by using a tracing wheel. Few artisans use this technique, because it is difficult to create the patterns equally spaced on a round surface and to adjust among the strong and weak lines.
There are two ways to create the black color of the Tokoname-Yaki. The first way is to mix manganese into the clay. The second is to apply black color to the surface by carbon. The black color of this Kyusu is created by the first way: manganese has been mixed into the clay. This creates a rich, solid and high quality black color.

(Tokoname Yaki)
Kyusu produced in the Tokoname region in the Aichi Prefecture account for 30 to 40 percent of the market share in Japan. The Kyusu industry has developed in Tokoname because fine particle soil which contains a lot of iron has been mined there for many hundreds of years.
Tokoname Yaki artisans are traditionally known for excelling in the woodturning technique. The Tokoname woodturning technique is said to be the best in Japan. Tokoname Yaki can be produced thinly, exquisitely or decoratively.
Tokoname Yaki are made from fine particle soil and heated to a high temperature, so that they are quite strong.
