Review The 2008 Kuradashi Gyokuro Premium is an extremely interesting tea, albeit not for the green tea purists. The aroma has hints of vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, some type of soft wood and/or grains, and a pleasant "barn-yard during the fall" overall theme. The taste imparts much of the same, with the subdued fall spice being very pronounced when steeped at 158F, almost to the point of it being hard to believe that this is not an artificially spiced tea (which obviously, it is not). The very slight sweetness of the vanilla is also noticeable at this temperature, as is the taste of hay. It definitely lingers on the palate for a good while, and continuously changes in complexity like fine wine. It finishes with a gyokuro sweetness that might be missed if it is drank too fast. When steeped at around 135F, the spice is mellowed out, the vanilla and hay nuances are brought forth, and the subtle natural sweetness of the gyokuro is much more pronounced. If you generally prefer the taste of pure fine-grade Gyokuro or Sencha, sans any floral or aromatic ingredient additions, this is perchance not be the tea for you. In either fashion, it is very unique and interesting to experience, and the spice will go well with the ensuing colder weather.
