Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Sohoh Tanaka in Sohoh Kiln
This bowl is very unique and superb, and made with a high level of skill. The more we look at this bowl, the more we are drawn in by its beauty. MIYAKO of this name means capital or Kyoto in the middle ages and NISHIKI means splendor in Japanese. MOMIJI red and gold color leaves are in full bloom.
This bowl is very elaborate work, and maple leaves are a well-loved symbol of autumn. This bowl depicts the autumn in ancient Kyoto utilizing expert glazing techniques. The glaze is the key element of this bowl. This glazing is called UNDEI YU in Japanese, and that means cloud and clay glazing. Sohoh Tanaka made his own glaze, and developed its uniqueness to create the elegance and WABI SABI aesthetic. This way of glaze highlights the beauty of earthenware, and adds elegance to the bowl which reflects the image of ancient Kyoto. Mr. Sohoh uses two slightly different types of glaze, and fires the bowl twice. This elaborate process adds depth to the bowl’s texture.
Three types of autumn leaves in gold, red, and mixed colors are inlayed inside and outside the bowl. Mr. Sohoh uses two different types of golden color: one is a solid golden color leaf, and for the other, gold is used to highlight only the veins of the leaf. His refined work reminds us of autumn glory in ancient Kyoto. Not only leaves but also branches, a tree trunk, and mosses are skillfully painted in a vigorous manner. Especially, the feel of the tree trunk is elaborately expressed. Inlaying with golden haze outside the bowl impresses the image of the morning mist in ancient Kyoto.
The form of the bowl provides elegance and vividness. Finger line called YUBIATO made by the potter's wheel adds subtle elegance, and paintings are also drawn quite beautifully. UNDEI YU glazing harmonizes all the elements of this bowl. Mr. Sohoh’s glazing technique indeed plays a very important role.
Each technique blends into the bowl very well, and autumn in ancient Kyoto is expressed elegantly and gorgeousness, but not too loudly. Once you touch and see the bowl in which elegance and WABI SABI aesthetic are expressed, this bowl will take you to the splendor of ancient Kyoto.
