This Matcha bowl is created by up-and-coming artist, Hozan Tanii. In contrast to the fact that all of his works are based on and sustained by various complex traditional techniques, they look sophisticated and modern. His style not only follows tradition but also fuels the spark of imagination, pursuing new heights.
In this work, Mr. Tanii aims to express the scenery of spring dawn. The warm, soft and fertile spring pours in, and wraps nature in sunlight, melting away the harsh winter. Flowers and grasses are illuminated by the tender morning sunshine, and begin to sprout. The irregularly diffuse light reflects the calm spring sea. HARU means spring, and HIKARI means light in Japanese. This bowl tells a story. Nature has waited for a long time during the harsh winter, yet emerges in the spring sunlight, full of joy. Even after a long, harsh winter, spring begins again.
One of the most remarkable features is the glaze, which Hozan Tanii specially developed for this Matcha bowl to evoke the rich and poignant beauty, and lovely atmosphere of springtime in Japan. The glaze is named KOHBAI KOGANE YU in Japanese. KOHBAI means ash of coffee beans, after roasting. KOGANE means golden yellow, and YU means glaze. The artist experimented by mixing coffee bean ash into the glaze, and was enchanted by the result, a deep, rich, and warm color. This is the first attempt in the world to use coffee bean ash in glaze. Soft and calm golden color and slightly gray glaze pair beautifully on the bowl.
The glaze flows down emphatically, especially from the middle to low side, accentuating the form. Three parts on the bottom are not glazed, because Mr. Tanii holds this bowl with three fingers during the glazing process. One of them on the front face which is reddish earthenware color represents the morning sun. When the day breaks, the sun sheds lights over the landscape, and mountains, flowers, and grasses are bathed in a soft golden light. Two small parts on the back side also add superb accent to the bowl. The contrast of flowing glaze, scarlet earthenware, and subtle form is quite unique and exquisite.
Glaze also coats the inside of the bowl, expressing the spring ocean. Inside the bowl inlays with golden color glaze, as if the calm surface of the ocean sparkles in the sunlight.
The form is quite unique. The middle to bottom on the side is plentiful, yet fits into the hands adequately. The rim is shaped like four or five mountains, which is a traditional technique called GOZAN. GOZAN means five mountains in Japanese. Kyoto, which has been the center of tea culture since ancient times, is a basin surrounded by five mountains. It is a stylish shaping technique which offers the suggestion of the Kyoto skyline.
The smooth indentation on the middle is called EKUBO, which means dimple in Japanese. It helps not only to relax viewers but also to fit easily with the thumb when being held.
