Sophisticated Shigaraki-Yaki (Shigaraki pottery)
Made by Hozan Tanii

This Matcha Bowl is created only for Hibiki-an by up-and-coming artisan, Hozan Tanii. In contrast to the fact that all of his works are based on and sustained by various complex traditional techniques, they look sophisticated and modern. His style not only follows tradition but also fuels the spark of imagination, pursuing new heights.

The artisan, Mr. Tanii aims to express tension and stability, or dynamism and tolerance through this Matcha Bowl. The harmony and balance of the tension and stability create a certain aura. DAICHI of this name means the earth and KAZE means wind in Japanese.

This bowl features CHOHSEKI YU, a type of Japanese feldspar glaze. Mr. Tanii developed a new type of CHOHSEKI YU feldspar glaze for this Matcha Bowl. His CHOHSEKI YU is unique and quite different from the ones which are usually used for SHINO YAKI.
The surface texture of the glaze looks like granite. The sporadic texture on the surface of the glaze is created by isinglass in the glaze burning. Air bubbles on the glaze create a unique atmosphere. This CHOHSEKI YU, with its gray color of semi-dull luster, lends a courtly relaxed and warm atmosphere.

The form is called TSUTSU GATA. The wide base impresses stability. The curve from low side of outside to bottom is generous. When you hold this in your two hands, you will feel its strength and generosity.
Base is carefully scraped away and shaped; this is regarded as proof of a high grade Matcha Bowl. Middle of side is slightly narrow, which adds visual tension.

As above, the glaze and form looks like the DAICHI earth which expresses stability or tolerance. You can see the HAKEME brush mark starting from the middle side of outside and finishes at middle of inside. Mr. Tanii expresses this as the wind blowing on the earth. He adds tension by the HAKEME brush mark. The harmony and balance of tension and stability, or dynamism and tolerance are quite superb.

To consider the time and care taken to create, it is set at quite a reasonable price. This will deepen in atmosphere over time. Hozan’s world will certainly enrich your green moment.

Hozan Tanii

Hozan Tanii was born in 1953. He graduated from the technical art department at Osaka Art University. And he took over the third generation of Tanikan Kiln in 1983. He is one of only a few artisans who explore the infinite beauty, depth, and range of clay itself, in contrast to the many artisans who explore glaze colors or printing. He has and makes full use of fourteen kinds of kilns and several tens of thousands kinds of glaze in order to bring out the boundlessness possibility of earthen clay. He frequently goes to the mountain in Shigaraki where he lives and collects clay. He has continued to experiment using the clay he finds and tries to bring out the infinite possibility of clay for over 30 years. All of his arts are well-planned and elaborated in various view points, beauty, function, usefulness, and so on. In addition, made from sustainable natural elements, his creations work symbiotically with the earth's ecosystem.
