Traditional matcha bowl
Made by Zuisho Iwamoto

Your eyes will immediately be drawn to the attractive pattern like cracked ice on the surface of this Matcha Bowl.

HYO RETSU, which means cracked ice in Japanese, is a very traditional Japanese glazing technique. This technique intentionally creates an intricate network of thin surface cracks in the glaze. Fine surface cracks are created by using two layers of glaze, then taking advantage of a difference of shrinking percentage between ceramic clay and glaze. These cracks, also known as "Craze" appear while the ceramic cools down after firing. In fact, these small cracks will continue to form for two weeks after firing, so the artisan must wait quite some time before seeing the final result of the pattern. To emphasize the Craze, the artisan uses a dark red-toned undercoat containing iron called "Bengara" under the glaze.

HYO RETSU glaze is very thick and heavy in weight. So, Zuisho Iwamoto must make the ceramic Chawan extremely thin, which requires great skill, so that the finished Chawan is not too thick and heavy.
This Chawan is a traditional tapered shape known as "Tenmoku". The simple form brings out the beauty of the HYO RETSU glaze.

We are so happy that we can provide this traditional HYO RETSU Matcha Bowl at a reasonable price. Would you enjoy matcha served in this elegant HYO RETSU Matcha Chawan?
