diameter: 4.72inch (12cm) height: 2.95inch (7.5cm), standard matcha bowl size
Made by Nishijima Hideki at Yanagi Kiln
All works of Hideki Nishijima are not only created in compliance with the strict rules of tea ceremony schools but are also simple and quite warm-hearted. So they are well-loved in Japan for many reasons.
This Matcha bowl is characterized by its remarkable iron glaze. Some areas of the glaze are thin ocher, while other areas are coated in thick umber brown. The contrasting density of the glaze is created by various techniques, carving many lines on the side, creating small horizontal bumps inside, coating other glaze only on inside of rim and right side, and so on. The glaze creates a WABI SABI atmosphere.
At first glance, the shape of this Matcha bowl looks simple. However, this is designed based on deep insight and is truly ideal for matcha preparation, according to the rules of tea ceremony. Its humility hides immense warmth and beauty, which it will slowly reveal to you.
This bowl is soft and warm to the touch by hands or mouth. The rim of this piece is thin and designed with some fluctuation in height. The middle and lower sides are deliberately whittled away and taken up. The curve of middle and lower sides not only fits well in the hands but is also quite beautiful. Three spots at the bottom, which are created by putting in the kiln, add to the atmosphere.
To consider the qualities above, this Matcha bowl is very reasonable in price. Once you try, you will certainly understand why the works of Hideki Nishijima are loved by so many in Japan.
