[New] Camellia Tama-Yunomi (handcrafted Teacup: 160ml) US$65.00

Camellia Tama Yunomi

Handcrafted teacup: 160ml (5.63fl oz)
Sophisticated Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made at Toan Kiln

Toan Kiln is known for its vibrant painted pottery. Seasonal flowers are printed in a bold and modern style. The subtle and elegant atmosphere draws viewers. The works are printed with a special technique using multi-colored dye.

On this Yunomi, the Camellia flower is printed with this special dyeing technique. In Japan, it is said that Camellia evokes "glory" or "perfect fascination". From a botanical or biological viewpoint, the Camellia is very close to the tea tree, which is strong and resilient and lives for many years, so that it has been traditionally considered to be an auspicious flower. Throughout Japanese history, the Camellia has been well-loved especially by women, and has been frequently portrayed on KIMONO.

The special technique used to create this design is based on the traditional method of printing. It is not easy to express a vivid pattern with this technique. It is largely dependent on the gradation of dyeing, which has been cultivated through the works printed with seasonal flowers. The surface of this Yunomi is glazed using a traditional technique called "Mura Gake" or coating the ceramic before it has fully dried and is still moist. This gives an uneven finish which creates visual interest. The degree of irregularity depends on when the artist applies the glaze and the moisture level of the ceramic.

This Yunomi has a unique shape. We call this Yunomi's shape 'Tama-Yunomi'. 'Tama' means 'ball' in Japanese. You may think this Yunomi is not easy to use to drink green tea, but once you try this Yunomi, you'll know its round shape is really quite comfortable, pleasant and lovely to hold in your hands.

The works of Toan Kiln are known for their quality and careful craftsmanship.
